Black Church Studies

In our rapidly changing culture, Black church pastors and leaders have a unique opportunity to be a voice of hope, healing, justice, wisdom, redemption, and reconciliation to the broader church at large. The Black church has incredible potential to have a powerful transformative effect in rebuilding and renewing divided communities.

Grace School of Theology’s Black Church Studies Program will help you find the mentoring and training you need to be a catalyst of transformation and reconciliation in your community. The program aims to educate everyone, eradicate biblical illiteracy, celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of the Black Church.

Pursue Black Church Studies through a:

  • Certificate in Black Church Studies
  • Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies (BABS) with a minor in Black Church Studies
  • Master of Ministry (MM) with a Black Church Studies Concentration

BC-442 Introduction to Black Church Studies (Undergraduate and Certificate) – 2 Credit Hours

This course is a broad overview study on the history of the Black Church in American society, with the purpose of informing the uninformed and educating all interested parties, while celebrating the contributions of the Black Church as a ministry and an institution since its inception. The following subject matter is not exhaustive but illustrative of what the professor will address during this course: Black Church History in America, Black Church Worship Experience in America, Black Church Preaching in America, Black Church Ethics in America, and more.

BC-448 Exploring Development Opportunities in the Black Community (Undergraduate and Certificate) – 2 Credit Hours

This course explores various opportunities to develop the surrounding community in which the Black Church resides. The students will examine closely the Black Church’s involvement in the following areas of study: education, financial literacy, workforce development, housing, and recreation. The purpose is to inform the uninformed and educate all interested parties concerning the Black Church and her local mission of developing community holistically.

This course is an intricate study on how the Black Church empowers her community outside of Sunday morning worship. We will explore the Black Church’s involvement in education, financial literacy, workforce development, housing, and recreation. The purpose is to inform the uninformed and educate all interested parties concerning the Black Church and her local mission of developing community holistically.

BC-450 The Black Church: A Kingdom Approach to Racism in America (Undergraduate and Certificate) – 2 Credit Hours

This course is an exploratory look into how racism has been woven into the fabric of American Society, the wealth gaps caused by it, why the Christian Church can’t be silent, and why the Black Church must take the lead to continue to evoke change.

BC-750 Racism & The Black Church’s Kingdom Response (Graduate and Certificate) – 2 Credit Hours

This course is an in-depth look into the start and spread of racism in American Society, the wealth gaps caused by it, the role the Black Church played and still plays to liberate blacks in America from the effects of it, and how the church can and should speak with a united voice against racism.
