Faculty Highlight: Dr. Ron Allen

Unsung Heroes in the Discipleship Program Banner
By Dr. Dave Anderson, Founder and President of Grace School of Theology
I first got to know Dr. Ron Allen as my Sunday School teacher at Scofield Memorial Church in Dallas, Texas. I was the Youth Director there while attending Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), Ron was a doctoral student at the same. I quickly realized this was not your average Sunday School teacher. In fact, I learned more about the Minor Prophets from Ron’s teaching in Sunday School than I did in my classes at seminary. An unusually gifted man, Dr. Allen was not only the best Old Testament (OT) student in his class, but he also won the preaching award the year he graduated.
After seminary, Ron was hired by Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (just Western Seminary today) in Portland, OR, to head up their OT department, which he did for twenty-five years. He spent the next twenty-five years in the English Bible department at DTS. While I was working on my dissertation on Psalm 110, I thought I would drop by Ron’s office to get his insights into a couple of questions I had about the psalm. I’d ask a question, and he would just gaze off into the distance and pour out an answer. Apparently, he had the psalm memorized. I mentioned, “It would seem you have given this psalm some thought.” “Once or twice,” came his humble answer.
Yes, Dr. Allen is a scholar, but unlike many scholars, he is a great communicator. On top of all that, he is humble. We are privileged to have Dr. Ron Allen teaching courses for us after his retirement from DTS. He is a strong proponent of free grace and dispensationalism.
