6 Sessions – Thursdays, 7:00 PM CT

October 1 – November 5, 2020

Why is this Happening?

“The endurance that we learn in our trials produces character.”

Carmen Pate’s companion study to her book “In Our Weakness He is Strong” has never been more relevant such as the time that we are in right now.

The pandemic is no stranger around the globe, making most of us question why God allowed something the causes pain, suffering, and loss. Carmen delicately tackled the impact of these events and emotions on both our life and faith.

Is it wrong to question God?

In her book, Carmen narrated her cancer journey and how God walked with her through it. She admittedly recalled that she questioned God on several occasions. Recounting the Psalmist, we can clearly see that David likewise questions God repeatedly. Carmen encourages us to ask questions because God knows our fears and how imperfect our faith can be.

“When we are intimate with the Lord, He welcomes our questions.”

Every time we question God, we are invited to remember these three things about Him:

  1. The bigger picture that God’s plan is to save everyone from eternal death and suffering by giving the perfect sacrifice: Jesus
  2. God’s eternal perspective in our temporary circumstance.
  3. His unparalleled love in the midst of our most difficult trials

Endurance, Character, and Hope

Once we endure the suffering and pain, we can rest in the assurance that it will produce in us character, and from that is hope that will not put us into shame. The suffering and pain serve as a fire that refines our character leaving and melting off the things that should not be in our life and heart.

Out of our tested refined character, hope is produced and hope will keep us going.

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”
-Romans 5:3-5
