Balancing Faith, Family, and Study on a Missionary Journey

Being a missionary and traveling extensively did not stop Jan Eric “Jek” Valle from pursuing theological education. Despite his commitments in Vietnam and the Philippines, Jek’s desire to learn more about God and serve people with a deeper understanding of Scripture drives his continuous study. Currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies, his story is a testament to the lifelong pursuit of knowing God and its profound impact on one’s ability to serve others.

Balancing Faith, Family, and Study on a Missionary Journey
My Grace education will be really helpful, especially when I plant churches and go to the nations. I want to proclaim who Jesus is according to the Bible, not the distorted versions often portrayed by the media.
Jek chose Grace after hearing positive reviews from colleagues and receiving a strong recommendation from his pastor. “I heard a lot of good reviews about it, so I jumped in,” he recalls. The program’s online format was a crucial factor in his decision, as it allowed him to balance his missionary duties with his studies. “As a missionary, you travel a lot. The online format makes it accessible for me,” he explains. However, this convenience also posed challenges. “Traveling frequently means it can be tough to keep up with coursework. At first, the idea of a Master’s program seemed intimidating, but the staff at Grace were incredibly supportive and patient with me.
The journey has not been easy. Jek juggles his roles as a missionary, a student, and a father to three young children. The demands of each role are significant, but Valle navigates them with grace and determination, supported by his faith and family. “It is really challenging, but by the grace of God and with the support of my wife, we manage our schedules as a family,” he shares. His wife’s unwavering support has been a cornerstone in his ability to pursue his education and mission work simultaneously.
The accessibility and responsiveness of the faculty and staff at Grace have been instrumental in Jek’s academic success. “Whether we are in Vietnam or back in the Philippines, the online platform is user-friendly and comprehensive,” he says. “Everything is available for me. It’s like a one-stop-shop.” The staff’s willingness to assist and provide timely feedback has been invaluable, especially during transitions between countries. “They were very gracious and helpful whenever I needed them, replying promptly and ensuring I had what I needed.”
Jek’s pursuit of advanced theological education is driven by a deep desire to serve his ministry more effectively. “You can never know too much about the Bible,” he asserts. His goal is to lead his congregation with knowledge and confidence, providing clear and truthful guidance. “I don’t want to tell the people I lead, ‘I don’t know.’ I want to lead them to the truth and illuminate the Word of God in their lives.”
Looking ahead, Valle sees his education as a vital tool in his mission to plant churches and spread the true message of Jesus. “It will be really helpful, especially when I plant churches and go to the nations. I want to proclaim who Jesus is according to the Bible, not the distorted versions often portrayed by the media.”
Jek’s journey through Grace highlights the importance of theological education for those committed to ministry and underscores the support systems that make such a journey possible. “I highly recommend Grace for those who want to pursue their theological education,” he concludes. His journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with faith, support, and determination, it is possible to balance multiple roles and achieve one’s goals.
