Grace in Action

Embodying Grace in the Art of Biblical Counseling

Mental health issues are a reality for many people, regardless of age, gender, and social economic status. If not given the right amount of attention, it can lead to unhealthy living and relationships. Thus, individuals experiencing anxiety and depression should be provided the needed support to help them navigate challenging life situations.

Embodying Grace in the Art of Biblical Counseling
I appreciated the seminary’s view on grace, as I wanted that to be a focus of my counseling ministry.

This is where the art of biblical counseling comes into place. Its goal is to explore biblical perspectives, principles, and practices to give proper advice and guidance to people experiencing a crisis. For Bonnie-sue Harper, a Master in Ministry (MM) student at Grace School of Theology, the message of God’s grace is essential to biblical counseling. People who are in a dark place in their lives need to hear about the love of Christ—the very central part of the Gospel. This is why she chose Grace and decided to enroll in its MM program and take a concentration in Biblical Counseling

Students who are enrolled in the MM program of Grace can elect a ministry concentration of their choice: Biblical Counseling, Black Church Studies, Church Planting, Ministry Leadership, and Pastoral Ministry. They can also choose an Interdisciplinary Concentration, which gives them the flexibility to explore multiple areas of study and application.

Grace holds on to Free Grace Theology regarding the salvation of humanity. The central part of the belief is God’s unmerited favor in saving sinners through the death of His only Begotten Son. Furthermore, it teaches that men can receive this gift of salvation through faith alone in Christ. It is a love that a believer of Christ’s justifying work on the cross did not earn and, at the same time, cannot lose.

Bonnie-sue is part of Flowing Brook, a non-profit organization that provides children and families with social and therapeutic support. She has learned about Grace through her son-in-law, who was enrolled in the Master of Divinity program at the seminary.

Upon hearing all the benefits of growth through his education with Grace, she enrolled in the seminary to be more equipped in her counseling ministry.

“I have not been disappointed in any of the classes. The grace message is central!”
According to Bonnie-sue, her classes at Grace greatly impacted her life and ministry. Specifically, her understanding of the Scriptures became much clearer, and she has been able to apply them in her walk of faith and service to the Lord.

Moreover, Bonnie-sue admires the tremendous help given by her professors in making the degree more attainable for her and her fellow students. She has experienced firsthand how her professors are willing to work with her in her study, even during difficult situations in her student journey.

“Each professor shared their growing experience which, along with their knowledge and communicability of the Word, added to the whole grace growth experience.”
Bonnie-sue’s most significant challenge in her study came when her husband passed away in the middle of her degree work. During that time, she found support from her Grace family as they stayed by her side and prayed for her to get through the harrowing moment in her life.
“The professors, fellow students, and discipleship groups were supportive and prayed for me as I walked that unexpected road with the Lord.”
The journey of finishing her MM degree and becoming more equipped in the counseling ministry continues for Bonnie-sue. Even though the road ahead may present challenges, she believes she can accomplish her goal in time through God’s providence.
“The Grace administration has worked wonderfully with me to complete my degree.”
