Dedicated Dad Found an Attainable Education at Grace

Joy de Jesus works full-time in his chosen field of profession. But when people ask him about what his full-time job is, his response would always be “being a father to my child and a husband to my wife.” This only speaks of his dedication to his family and providing for their needs. But despite his priorities and busy schedule, his desire to enroll in a seminary and be more equipped in sharing the love of Christ to others never stopped. And he is glad to have found an attainable education at Grace School of Theology.

I discovered that Grace had provided a way for me to start my formal theological studies while at the same time working a full-time job. Not everyone who desires to pursue theological studies can do so full-time. The flexibility that Grace allows was exactly what I was looking for.
According to Joy, he found out about Grace through his friend, who was enrolled at the school during the time when he was actively searching for a seminary. He made a quick decision to enroll at Grace, hoping that he would fit into the program. Eventually, he was accepted.
“Grace has provided a way for me to start my formal theological studies while at the same time working a full-time job. Not everyone who desires to pursue theological studies can do so full-time. The flexibility that Grace allows was exactly what I was looking for.”
But the journey as a student has not been an easy one for Joy. For him, the moment a student starts studying in the seminary, everything will be a challenge. This includes juggling your responsibilities at work and home together with your course lessons and requirements.
Joy went through and had overcome those challenges. For him, one of the factors that kept him pursuing his Grace education is his professors who are not only there to teach but also to encourage him. He is amazed at how his professors were able to make the extra effort outside of class to make a difference in students’ lives.

For Joy, the classes he took at Grace made a huge impact on his life. These include the Principles of Biblical Interpretation with Dr. Mark Haywood, which prepared him to properly understand the Bible and interpret it as accurately as possible. His Conflict Resolution class with Prof. Garry Kiker was very helpful as well. It taught him some strategies for dealing with conflicts and how to help those who are experiencing them. Both were his first subjects in Grace.

“There is not a month in my life since after taking both subjects that I didn’t re-watch a recorded meeting or parts of it.”

Joy’s ministry Internship under the guidance of Director of Discipleship, Dr. Steve Norris, has been meaningful to him as well. The experience made him learn more about discipleship and made him confront himself and reflect on how he is doing discipleship.

“I want to take opportunities to disciple people, to share God’s love and salvation, and maybe encourage those who need encouragement.”

Aside from the professors that he mentioned, Joy also credits his entire Grace family for helping him accomplish what he needed to accomplish during his student life. He describes them as friendly and helpful people.
“Being around them gives you confidence that you’ll not get lost. But at the same time, you are humbled to be a beneficiary of the goodness of the people around you.”

Thanks to attainable education at Grace, despite his busy schedule and other priorities in life, Joy was able to finish his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies (BABS) and is currently pursuing his Master of Divinity (MDiv). Inspired by his theological studies at Grace, Joy plans to continue learning and growing in the knowledge and wisdom of God’s grace. He also wants to disciple other people who will also be able to teach others about the love of Christ—a love that cannot be earned or lost.

He is inspired by a quote from a renowned speaker and author, Howard Hendricks. “If you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow.”
