My path to seminary was spurred by realizing that I needed help to better understand Scripture. My path to missions was realizing that the biggest needs for academic ministry are found in the majority world.
Not all missionaries have a chance to enter seminary for further theological studies because of limited financial budget. It is also almost impossible for them to attend physical classes because they are usually in the mission field or places with unique geographical challenges (e.g. jungles, mountains, islands.). In addition, most of their time is spent catering to the needs of the people they are immersed in.
But Grace has made it possible for missionaries like Joshua to access quality seminary training! Thanks to affordable fees and accessible classes that can be replayed at any time, finishing a degree in theology becomes highly attainable.
“Despite my much smaller salary, I can still afford a world-class education… Grace being online-focused enables me to keep studying while I am on the field.”
Currently doing his mission work in Naga City, Philippines under World Team, Joshua provides training to local church leaders and plants churches in rural places. He also serves as a professor at the Bicol Bible College of Leadership in Naga City and the Word Bible College in Markina City, Philippines. For him, accomplishing his ministries while being able to attend classes virtually is valuable—not just for him but for the people he ministers to.
“I am in the USA only every few years, so the format is essential. And it not only makes it possible for me, but it also provides an opportunity for Filipino students that I counsel to study without a requirement to relocate.”

Not only does Grace offer affordable and accessible seminary education, but it also provides a “high level of education and scholarship.” The Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools recognizes the degree programs being offered at Grace, including the DMin program that Joshua is taking. For him, this makes the school different from any other seminary—some are inexpensive but non-accredited, and some are accredited but too expensive.

“The balance that Grace provides is essential for quality education for the world, and this is what I have experienced.”

What Joshua learned in his courses at Grace greatly impacted his life and ministry. Increasing Relevancy in Your Preaching with Dr. Calvin Pearson was a “great encouragement” for him. It helped expand his ability to communicate the truth of the Scriptures. Meanwhile, doctoral work with Dr. Fred Chay in Contemporary Theological Issues and Contemporary Moral Issues in Ministry got him to “explore deeply,” “engage,” and “evaluate” the current state of theological work. As a missionary to the world, Joshua appreciates his professors’ approach to biblical teaching—being faithful to what the Scriptures intend to say and communicating them well to students.
“Having compatible doctrine taught in an irenic (non-combative) fashion was a huge plus. It enables me to delve deeper with scholars who can help better articulate truths in Scriptures.”
Joshua also desires future spiritual leaders worldwide to access the same type of quality seminary education that he is receiving from Grace. For him, the shared vision of being “a seminary to the world” is very encouraging. It would allow more and more people to be trained in sharing the love of Christ to others!
