The Pressing Need to Go Deeper In God’s Word

Andreas Neudecker is a pastor of an international church in Lemgo, Germany with members from more than 20 countries, including a congregation of Farsi believers, Iranians, and Afghans. With this unique role given by God, he has the opportunity to witness non-believers from non-Christian backgrounds give their life to Jesus, get baptized, and spread the Gospel.
The Pressing Need to Go Deeper In God's Word
Andreas shares that he is now more prepared for his pastoral ministry due to investing significant time in studying the Word. He is better equipped to deliver sermons and lead Bible studies. He realized the challenge to discover solutions to complex problems and to think more deeply about issues such as predestination, foreknowledge, free choice, and open theism.
Andreas grew up in a countryside town in Germany. He and his wife have been married for around ten years, and they have one child together. He graduated from high school in 2008 and then went on to work as an au pair in Michigan for the summer. Afterward, he returned to Germany to work at a factory for one year. He subsequently went on to study at Bibelschule Brake from 2009 to 2012, where he received his Bachelor of Theology degree.
As with most Bavarians, Andreas was christened as a newborn in a Catholic church. When he was around two years old, his mother and father professed their faith in Jesus Christ, left the Catholic faith, and joined an evangelical Baptist church. Because of his parents’ faith, he grew up in church, attended Sunday school, and became acquainted with God and His Word. When he was approximately eight years old, the truth that he is a sinner sunk in and decided to follow Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Years ago, he saw first-hand how valuable it is to set aside time each day to go deeper into God’s Word. He has never forgotten that experience. As his personal and spiritual life progressed, he became increasingly aware of the pressing need to devote more time to delve deeper into God’s Word. When he began taking up his Master of Arts in Biblical Studies (MABS) at Grace School of Theology in January 2020, he realized that he had made one of the most impactful decisions of his life.

Studying at Grace gave him the opportunity to go back in history and connect with professors and other students from all around the world. He particularly enjoyed the Contemporary Moral Issues in Ministry course wherein the class discussed how Christian theology manifests itself in everyday ethics. In this course, they grappled with contentious themes such as the death sentence. They also studied the Scriptures for answers about the environment and how we should deal with nature. Other issues tackled how we should behave in different situations when we must choose and what God has to say about it. Andreas was confronted with issues such as marriage, divorce, life, death, abortion, and euthanasia, as well as questions on Christian ethics and moral dilemmas that we as Christians deal with daily.

While faced with such issues, Andreas found that he needed to dig deep and think through these concerns. He claims that Grace has a fantastic collection of courses that helped him answer those questions and issues biblically. He stated that he had never had a situation like this before. Andreas noted that it is not always easy to be in leadership, mainly when serving as a Christian. The challenge includes developing deep, meaningful relationships and finding excellent friends with whom you can share your deepest feelings (and other people who understand you). Andreas saw further how iron sharpens iron through Grace’s Student Discipleship Groups as he couldn’t wait for Tuesdays to arrive to share ministry struggles and biblical application with fellow students from across the world.

During his time in seminary, Andreas struggled greatly with what to do next in his life. He realized that he could not offer anything to the table by himself and that he could not accomplish anything to honor God with his love on his own. He was poor, without financial resources, and had no particular abilities. As a result, he had a lot of worries in his heart. But then, by His Grace, God illuminated his heart and his ideas, and he was transformed. While praying and reading His Word one morning, the Holy Spirit directed his attention to Jeremiah chapter 17, verse 16a: “As for me, I have not hurried away from my position as a pastor to follow thee.”
The realization hit him right away: he must trust Him, follow Him, and serve Him if He is to use him for His glory. That is all he has to do. He knew God had called him as a pastor with all of his heart and soul. This was His life’s purpose and his unique calling.

Dr. Dave Anderson, President and Founder of Grace School of Theology, shared with Andreas and his classmates the story of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco during their Soteriology class. During the first construction phase, some employees died as they fell off the bridge without a safety net. This prompted them to invest in a safety net, which had two astounding results: not only did fewer people get wounded or killed, but the construction of the structure was completed much faster as a result.

Much like the construction workers, we can make more confident moves ahead in our journey forward when we feel protected. Because of this, Andreas realized why it is so necessary to preach and teach the doctrine of grace—a love that can never be earned and can never be lost. When people grasp this fundamental truth, they are no longer preoccupied with their actions and deeds. Instead, they’ll learn to stand on a rock-solid foundation (His substitutionary death for us) and proceed step-by-step in their spiritual life—looking to Christ and growing in grace (understanding what His life means for us).
